- [Development of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) core set for stroke survivors in community-based rehabilitation settings in Hong Kong](https://icfeducation.org/research/development-of-the-international-classification-of-functioning-disability-and-health-icf-core-set-for-stroke-survivors-in-community-based-rehabilitation-settings-in-hong-kong/) - Purpose: This study aimed to develop an ICF core set for assessing stroke survivors in community-based rehabilitation settings in Hong Kong. Material and methods: A three-round Delphi process which involved 39 multidisciplinary experts in community-based rehabilitation services was conducted to reach consensus on a preliminary version of ICF core set for stroke survivors. The initial questionnaire included 130 second-level ICF categories while the panel was invited to suggest additional categories. Experts rated the relevance of each category using a 5-point Likert-type scale. Consensus of ratings was assessed using Spearman's rho and inter-quartile range indices. Two experts were identified as outliers and excluded after the second and third rounds. The remaining 37 experts then then applied the preliminary core set to stroke survivors under their care. After 6 months of application, a fourth Delphi round using the same list of categories from the third round was conducted to refine the core set based on practical feedback. Results: After refinement through 30 out of 37 experts in the fourth Delphi round, the finalised core set was developed which included 41 categories. Conclusion: The final core set reflects key dimensions of functioning relevant to stroke survivors receiving community-based rehabilitation services in Hong Kong. - [An ICF-based interdisciplinary case management improves functioning, participation, and well-being for people with disabilities in community rehabilitation: a protocol for a randomised controlled trial](https://icfeducation.org/research/an-icf-based-interdisciplinary-case-management-improves-functioning-participation-and-well-being-for-people-with-disabilities-in-community-rehabilitation-a-protocol-for-a-randomised-controlled-tria/) - Background Community-delivered rehabilitation (CDR) aims to empower people with disabilities and promote their social inclusion. However, conventional multidisciplinary approaches often lack integration and personalised coordination. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) offers a structured framework that facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration, case management and person-centred care. This trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an ICF-based interdisciplinary case management model in improving functioning, participation, and subjective well-being among adults with physical disabilities receiving home-based community rehabilitation, compared with usual multidisciplinary care. Methods This is a six-month, single-blind, randomised controlled trial. Sixty participants will be recruited and randomly assigned via block randomisation to either an intervention group receiving structured ICF-based interdisciplinary case management or a control group receiving usual multidisciplinary care. The inclusion criteria were adults with physical disabilities eligible for CDR; exclusion criteria included severe cognitive impairment or inability to provide informed consent. The intervention consists of ICF-based assessments using the ICF Rehabilitation Set and Minimal Set of Environmental Factors, collaborative goal setting, monthly interdisciplinary case conferences, and coordinated care planning. The primary outcomes are functioning (WHO Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0, 36-item version) and well-being (Satisfaction with Life Scale). The secondary outcomes are changes in ICF qualifiers and therapist-related clinical outcomes (Australian Therapy Outcome Measures). Outcomes will be assessed at baseline and six months. Data will be analysed via intention-to-treat principles and generalised linear mixed models (GLMMs). Recruitment began in May 2025 and is expected to be completed by December 2025, with follow-up concluded by July 2026.

This is a construction- oriented study directed at developing a well-founded and integrated proposal, including exploratory, descriptive, and evaluative processes through a qualitative approach using complementary methods and techniques. It configures as a public health innovation research, anchored in Health Implementation Sciences (HIS), the Matrix Support Method (MSM), and the quality components evaluation method.The methodological process and operationalization of the study were organized into the following stages: 1) Problem identification; 2) Demand identification; 3) Identification of existing proposals, their potentials, and limitations; 4) Elaboration of a proposal adapted and contextualized to the scenario and its demands; 5) Description and critical discussion. Despite the study's results, the model and its components were also considered as data to be evaluated, interpreted, and discussed in light of the references that supported their development and the evidence found. The research obtained formal exemption from the need for submission to the Research Ethics Committee (REC) system, as it did not include field data collection or involve a sample with the participation of subjects. A prototype integrated model was constructed in three complementary axes (foundation and application of the ICF in PHC, matrix support, implementation, and evaluation), encompassing corresponding dimensions with proposals for identified gaps or demands. This resulted in the development of products for their viability in real scenarios, such as resources/tools (foundation, clinical reasoning, and functionality and disability assessment) and strategies (educational, application monitoring, implementation, and evaluative).

- [International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health: Catalyst for interprofessional education and collaborative practice](https://icfeducation.org/research/international-classification-of-functioning-disability-and-health-catalyst-for-interprofessional-education-and-collaborative-practice/) - Patient-centred and community-based care is required for promotion of health equity. To enhance patient-centred interprofessional care, the World Health Organization recommends using the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Stellenbosch University’s Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) strategy has promoted using ICF since 2010. Undergraduate medical students on rural clinical placements are expected to use ICF in approaching and managing patients. Students’ ability to develop interprofessional care plans using ICF is assessed by a team of preceptors representing various health professions. This study explored the experiences of medical students and their preceptors using ICF in IPECP, and how patients perceived care received. Associative Group Analysis methodology was used to collect data for this study. In total, 68 study participants were enrolled of which 37 were medical students, 16 preceptors and 15 patients. Students found ICF enabled a patient-centred approach and reinforce the importance of context. Patients felt listened to and cared for. Preceptors, obliged to use ICF, came to appreciate the advantages of interprofessional care, promoting mutually beneficial teamwork and job satisfaction. The value of integrating IPECP as an authentic learning experience was demonstrated as was ICF as a catalyst in pushing boundaries for change.
